Childhood Memories

Xu Beichen grew up in the countryside in the 1990s, when family-planning restrictions were still strict. Her grandparents favored boys over girls. When they had a younger brother, they wanted to send Xu Beichen away, but her father intervened, allowing her to grow up at home. Yet throughout her childhood, her grandparents never cared about her. Whenever the family faced a crisis, her grandmother always wanted her to drop out of school to save the family. When she had conflicts with her younger brother, everyone in the family took his side. As Xu Beichen endured their mistreatment, she also learned how to fight back. She knew her grandparents cared most about appearances, so whenever she faced unfair treatment, she would run into the open courtyard, throw a tantrum, roll around, and wail. To save face, her grandparents didn't dare mistreat her openly. At home, Xu Beichen feared no one. After starting school, she was wary of her teachers, but when one mistakenly accused her of being a thief, she stood up to authority and argued her case. When the truth came out, she demanded an apology from the teacher.
