Geronimo 19th century Apache Indian chief Geronimo was an Apache Indian leader in the southwestern United States. He led the Apache Indians to fight against the invasion of American Europeans. He had natural survival skills and was impeccable with bullets. Few people know that the photo of Geronimo kneeling on the ground with a gun in his hand was taken when he surrendered in 1886. In his later years, he was naturalized into American society, and since then there has been no large-scale resistance from American Indians.
