About This Novel
1. Background of the times During the Jiajing period of the Ming Dynasty, Wujiang County, Suzhou Prefecture in the south of the Yangtze River - clans were prosperous, and coffins were placed all over the place. Although the government explicitly ordered that "the coffins should be suspended for more than sixty days", the powerful gentry often violated the rules secretly. The autopsy system seems to be strict, but in fact it is full of loopholes: the workers' status is low and they are easy to be bribed, and the in-person examination by officials is just a formality, which has become a hotbed for corrupt officials to hide the corpses, destroy evidence, and bend the law for personal gain. 2. Core scene: Qinghe Yizhuang The largest private charity village in Wujiang County was founded by members of the Shen family. On the surface, it was a good place to "temporarily house coffins and help people attend burials," but in reality it was a "hiding place for corpses" where Shen Qinghe colluded with corrupt officials. It has a main courtyard (where the steward Zhuang Ding lives), a mourning pavilion (usually with the main coffin), and a secret house (where corpses are hidden, specially used to store corpses in murder cases, and coffins that have been suspended for a long time in violation of regulations). Lin Mo, a part-time widower, is hidden among them, and is controlled by Shen Qinghe throughout the process. 3. Core institutional connections (serves the plot, does not pile up historical materials) ① Mortal moratorium: Private funerals are held on 3-7 days, and Qinghe Yizhuang relies on "hidden fees" to help the powerful to extend the morgue period; ② Autopsy: Abnormal deaths in Yizhuang must be reported to the official, and full-time widows fill in the corpse form and the official signs it, but they can tamper with the corpse secretly and conceal the cause of death; ③ Collusion: The Shen family relies on clan power and colludes with Zhao Huaian, the classic historian, to use loopholes in the system to hide corpses for profit and cover up murder cases.
