[Historical Romance in an Imaginary Setting, Cute Pets, and Political Intrigue] The first volume is told from the first-person perspective of Tieshao, a black cat, with the limited viewpoint of a cat. It tells the story of how Tieshao transmigrates into the palace cat of the Cold Palace in the Great Yan Dynasty and helps Noble Lady Li bring down Eunuch Cen, the head of the Directorate of Ceremonial Affairs. The story blends cute pets with political intrigue, using a cat's keen senses of smell and hearing to drive the deductions. Sensitive elements are adapted safely: drowning is changed to flood control, and the cat serves as a "clawed covert agent" rather than directly killing anyone. It balances entertainment with platform compliance.
The first volume has twelve chapters, with one case per chapter: Tieshao identifies poisoned pastries, sneaks out at night and retrieves a bronze seal, and forms an alliance with three cats, Qian, Banshou, and Ci. Tieshao rescues Xiaodouzi, a young eunuch from the Laundry Bureau, and exposes a plot by the Directorate of Ceremonial Affairs to use five kinds of "death seals" to requisition poisonous bitter almonds and test poison on palace cats. Wen Yan, a copyist, secretly helps gather a chain of evidence, including a Geng-character token, medicine requisition records, and the cats' ledger. Eunuch Cen strikes back, but the evidence ultimately reaches the emperor. The Imperial Guards close in, and the crisis in the Cold Palace is resolved.
The volume is briskly paced, and the cat's perspective makes for a unique reading experience. The characters are vivid: Noble Lady Li is patient and restrained, Xiaodouzi is brave, and Wen Yan is complex. In the second volume, the characters will move to the Palace of Accumulated Elegance, root out the remaining conspirators, and dig deeper into the secrets of the death seals. It's one to look forward to.
