In ancient times, the world was a single whole, complete and undivided. Later, the One Origin "opened into forms" and shattered. Its fragments joined the Fourteen Gates of the Myriad Forms, scattered across the mortal world, and randomly attached themselves to people. These people became Form-Bearers.
Form-Bearers control different kinds of Form power, which can reinforce or counteract one another. Those with a Form are called the Pure; those without one are called the Plainfolk.
Lu Zhi is a Plainfolk born without a Form. There isn't even a single line on his palm, so he can't make a single seal.
Yet precisely because of this, he can contain anything and connect with anyone. He borrows Gates, links formations, and connects people. In the end, he becomes the place where all Forms converge.
