In 1981, in a remote mountain village of hunters, Zhao Tieshan gets a second chance at life, carrying the two ledgers his grandfather left behind: the Mountain Records, which map the trails, and the Hunter's Ledger, which records the people.
Whenever villagers lose livestock, go into the mountains and fail to return, or complain of hauntings, they come to him. He is a hunter, but also a mountain master.
Poachers, people hiding stolen goods, and frauds pretending to summon ghosts keep turning up in the mountains. Zhao Tieshan heads in with his hunting rifle. With sharp eyes, expert tracking, and a head full of old rules, he unmasks the mountain's ghosts one by one. It turns out the mountains were never haunted. People were the real monsters.
Every account must be settled, one entry at a time. Every ghost must be caught, one by one. In this life, the mountain master has returned.
