In the spring of 1985, Sun Dashan died in a remote mountain ravine, clutching half of an oil-stained copy of the Classic of Mountains his grandfather had left him. When he opened his eyes again, he was seventeen. The fishing boat had yet to cast off, and the people who owed the Sun family old debts were still alive and well. The mountains had their own guides, and the sea its own routes. In this life, he would once again shoulder his spear and climb the mountains, then take to the sea by boat, collecting every debt owed to him, one by one.
