Daoism teaches that “the Thirty-Six Heavenly Spirits govern transformation, while the Seventy-Two Earthly Fiends govern transmutation.” The transformations of the Thirty-Six Heavenly Spirits follow the principle of “conforming to the patterns of the earth and carrying out the decrees of Heaven.” This is called “Heavenly Spirit transformation,” the transformation of all things in the heavens and earth according to one’s will, the transformation of the “Dao.” The transmutations of the Seventy-Two Earthly Fiends, meanwhile, are the “artistic transformations” of yin and yang, the Five Elements, the Nine Palaces, and the Eight Trigrams. In this world, bandits run rampant, while ghosts, demons, and monsters wreak havoc among humanity, hunting people down to devour them.
