Cooking for the Mortal World

Lin Sui is the inheritor of her family's old-fashioned craft of healing through food. The Lin family never pursued rare delicacies. Their specialty was restorative cuisine: using ordinary ingredients and balancing the five flavors to ease troubled hearts and soothe pain and distress. A great fire destroyed the family home, burning most of their ancestral food-healing texts. Her father and brothers were falsely accused and forced to flee, while Lin Sui was left alone to wander the waterways of the southern countryside. With no money or powerful patrons to rely on, she used what remained of her family's craft to rent a shabby little shop by the wharf and open a small restorative eatery. She didn't serve grand banquets to the wealthy. Instead, she cooked hot meals for dockworkers, down-on-their-luck travelers, and heartbroken women. A bowl of clear, nourishing soup eased the exhaustion of a hard journey; a plate of home-style cooking untied the knots in a troubled heart. Food did more than fill the stomach: it could comfort a broken soul. Every customer who came through her door carried their own burdens: a woman who had lost her child, a disillusioned scholar, a general bearing old wounds, a girl with nowhere to call home. As Lin Sui helped people through food and recorded her customers' joys and sorrows, she quietly gathered clues about the injustice that had doomed her family. Amid the warmth of the kitchen, she met Shen Yan, who was gravely ill and deeply guarded. Weathered by hardship, he believed in no such thing as kindness. Yet, little by little, her restorative meals melted the ice around his heart. One pot and one stove to ease the world's sorrows, one meal at a time as she awaits justice for those wronged in the past. The finest taste in life isn't rare delicacies. It's ordinary people who refuse to bow to fate, amid the warmth and bustle of everyday life.
