"Twilight in the Iron Box"
A contemporary psychological realist novel that pays homage to Dostoevsky.
Twenty-three-year-old Shen Heting graduated from the normal school and came to the city with a literary dream. However, he was forced into a rental house of less than ten square meters in an urban village by a rejection letter and a bill. He had read "Crime and Punishment" and was familiar with Raskolnikov's every thought, but he never thought that one day he would stand on the edge of the same cliff - until he saw the neatly stacked banknotes in the iron box of the landlord, Mrs. Zhou, through the crack in the door.
He spent a whole week constructing a perfect theory for himself: The world divides people into two categories, one is the smart people who are pressed at the bottom and can't breathe, and the other is the mediocre lice sitting on the wealth. Taking that money is not a crime, it is correction. Crush a louse to death, why should you hesitate?
However, when the hammer actually fell, all the elaborate theories collapsed with a dull sound. Shen Heting fled back to his room with 32,000 yuan, only to find that the person he really killed might not be the old lady.
With cold and dense writing, the novel traces the whole process of a young man's slow descent into the abyss of his heart after a crime occurred. When the police investigation passes him by time and time again, when the neighbors go about their lives as usual and forget about it, what really begins to judge him is not the law, but every footsteps in the corridor, every dusk outside the window, and the "Crime and Punishment" that is always open to that page under the pillow.
This is a contemporary variation on crime and punishment, as well as a precise anatomy of a young soul - when a person uses his thoughts for himself
