During the Great Jing era, the ancient intangible art of shadow puppetry had been passed down for generations in Luoying Town, hidden deep among the mountains. Legend said that the ancient secrets of shadow puppetry could bridge yin and yang, carrying souls within shadows. A thousand years ago, the ancestors of shadow puppetry decreed that the play Return to Dust from the Netherworld must never be performed, and sealed away a wordless ghost puppet. The young shadow puppeteer Yanshuo was an orthodox inheritor of the art. From childhood, he had followed his grandfather in learning every traditional technique, from carving donkey hide and applying colors to manipulating the strings, and he strictly observed the rules of the craft. Then his grandfather vanished without a trace, leaving behind only a battered puppet case and half a fragment of a ghost puppet. Strange events began occurring one after another in Luoying Town: at night, the empty stage played by itself, puppets danced on the white screen without anyone pulling their strings, and the silhouettes of missing townspeople appeared imprinted on the puppets.
As Yanshuo searched for his grandfather and unraveled one mysterious phenomenon after another, he met a Daoist who understood yin-yang talismans and a craftswoman skilled at making pigments for shadow puppets. Together, they investigated the long-buried secrets of the art. He gradually learned that a thousand years ago, a master puppeteer had tried to practice forbidden magic, hoping to draw living souls from ghost puppets and nourish shadow spirits with human souls. The attempt ended in disaster. The ancestors sealed the evil shadows with the full force of their cultivation and left behind a lineage of shadow guardians to watch over them. Now the seal was weakening, and an ambitious figure in the shadows was searching for the complete ghost puppet in hopes of reviving the forbidden art.
Amid the clash between good and evil, Yanshuo witnessed both sides of shadow puppetry: orthodox performances were an intangible cultural heritage that carried stories and comforted the dead, while shadow magic that strayed into evil could turn yin and yang upside down. As they fought enemies who controlled shadow puppets, the group also searched for ancient puppet scrolls and traditional carved printing blocks scattered across the land. Through repeated brushes with death, Yanshuo came to understand the Way of shadow puppetry and realized that illusions of light and shadow were ultimately empty, while a craftsperson’s greatest virtue lay in upholding the right path. In the end, he fused orthodox shadow puppetry
