Lying Low 1

Synopsis of *Lying Low* Shanghai, 1941. The city is teeming with spies. Shen Mo, an analyst in the communications office of Unit 76, is highly skilled and aloof, a technocrat everyone sees as someone who knows the rules and stays out of factional politics. No one knows he is a deeply embedded agent known as Firefly. His memories are incomplete, and even when his handler died, they left him no full set of instructions. A copy of Three Hundred Tang Poems seized by the authorities drags Shen Mo into even deeper darkness. Every clue points to a truth he cannot accept: he is the traitor within the organization, code-named Canary. Suspicion, self-destruction, and interrogation follow one after another. With no other way to prove himself, Shen Mo must offer a token of allegiance, staining his hands with innocent blood and climbing step by step into the inner circle of Unit 76's Operations Department. Forced to kill his former self with his own hands, he becomes a despised collaborator and lackey, caught between his fiancée's disappointment and his enemies' trust. When the final showdown comes, the only way to deliver the intelligence is to pay with his own flesh and blood and the infamy of being a collaborator. He embraces death to find life. His only comfort is the faded collection of poems he leaves his beloved, along with a final message: “Even in the night, a firefly can be its own little light.”
