The Chronicle of Later Tang: An Epic of Heroes Amid the Five Dynasties and Ten Kingdoms
The Chronicle of Later Tang is a historical novel of conquest set in the early Five Dynasties and Ten Kingdoms period. It tells the sweeping story of Li Yunqian, a young man who rises from placing third in the imperial examinations to becoming a regional governor, then raises the banner of “Restoring Tang” and, after ten years of campaigning, unifies the realm and founds the Later Tang dynasty.
Grounded in rigorous historical research, the novel eschews transmigration, fantasy, and other such elements, faithfully recreating a turbulent era ruled by military strongmen and divided among rival warlords. The story opens on the eve of Chang’an’s fall. At fifteen, Li Yunqian sets out for Hefei carrying The Zhenguan Political Essentials, following his mentor’s charge to “wait until the people of the realm have had enough.” There, he begins the arduous task of restoring order amid the ruins. From Hefei to Fuyang and then Fengyang, from civil official to leader of a rebel army, every step in the protagonist’s growth is closely bound to the pulse of his times.
The story focuses not only on battles and campaigns, but also on the nobility of human nature in troubled times: the brotherly bond between Li Yunqian and his brilliant younger brother, Li Yunliu, the trust unto death between him and his sworn elder brother, Xu Jingguo, and the tragic farewell between him and Wu Yunshan, his sworn brother. Together, they weave a richly human historical tapestry. Beyond political intrigue and bloodshed, the author keeps “the will of the people” as an underlying thread: the people’s yearning for peace is the true force driving the wheels of history.
The novel has now completed a compelling prologue, revealing the weight of its historical texture and its literary potential. The fires of war have been lit, and its heroes are still young. A grand saga of restoring the Tang is slowly unfolding.
