Chronicles of the Eastern Zhou was compiled by Feng Menglong of the Ming dynasty and later polished by Cai Yuanfang of the Qing dynasty. To this day, it remains the most widely read novel about the history and people of the Spring and Autumn and Warring States periods. It has been beloved by readers for the centuries since its publication. Drawing on a sweeping historical perspective and sources such as Zuo Tradition and Discourses of the States, the author carefully selected and linked together a complex array of historical events, vividly recreating more than five hundred years of history, from the rise and fall of the Five Hegemons of the Spring and Autumn period to the struggle for supremacy among the Seven Warring States.
