When you gaze into the river, the river gazes back at the black and white in your eyes.

On a stormy night, a drowning man is rescued, only to push away the lifebuoy three times. His death brings the river's story to light, and Zhang Cheng, a grassroots law enforcement officer, becomes trapped in a deadly web of confusion. Amid a storm of accountability and a maze of human nature, he uncovers, layer by layer, the truth behind his father's death twenty years ago, while also unraveling the secrets of river conservation. He risks everything for truth and conscience.

A hard-hitting work that perfectly blends personal fate, family ethics, the painful issues of the times, and suspense. It is more than a crime-solving story: it is a profound allegory about a river, a group of people, and an era.

Grassroots law enforcement officers, iron-fisted inspectors, lone-wolf reporters, desperate river guardians... Together they form a vivid portrait of an era.
