The Tumultuous Years

In the 1950s, the newly founded People's Republic of China lived under the shadow of nuclear threats for years, and was repeatedly subjected to nuclear blackmail by Western countries.

In 1955, the Secretariat of the CPC Central Committee held an enlarged meeting and decided to establish China's nuclear industry on a comprehensive scale. Scientists and engineers from every relevant field across the country flocked to the Second Ministry of Machine-Building Industry, dedicating themselves to the research and construction effort behind China's first atomic bomb. Chen Weimin, a survivor of the Nanjing Massacre, led his research team through countless technical challenges, undaunted by hardship and devoting their youth to the cause.

At 3:00 p.m. on October 16, 1964, China's first atomic bomb was successfully detonated at Lop Nur in Xinjiang. Yet most of the scientists who made it possible never left behind their real names.
