The 1970s Factory Girl: From the Start, I Fix a Liberation Truck, and the Whole Factory Begs Me to Stay!

In 1974, in the courtyard of a transport depot in a northern county town, 15-year-old Wu Jinhua had an "improper" hobby: fixing cars.

Her mother pressured her to go to the woolen mill and "do the kind of work a girl should do." Her father was a repair-shop foreman, but all he told her was, "Those wheels are taller than you. Don't get in the way!"

Then a Jiefang-brand truck "went on strike." The men spent three days trying to fix it without success, so Wu Jinhua slipped beneath it under cover of darkness.

At dawn, the engine roared to life, waking the whole depot. Her father stared at his daughter, her hands covered in grease, and fell silent for the first time.

More surprising still, this act of "rebellion" shook her mother out of a lifetime of resignation. She handed in her textile factory badge and strode into the department store to work as a sales clerk. "If my daughter can fix cars, why can't I sell watches?"

One wrench, two generations of women breaking free.

When steel clashes with gears, the sparks will eventually burn through the prejudices of an era.
