The Legend of Wang Mang

Wang Mang (4523 BCE), courtesy name Jujun, was a powerful relative of the imperial family and a regent at the end of the Western Han dynasty, as well as the founder of the Xin dynasty. Born into the illustrious Wang clan, he was the nephew of Empress Wang Zhengjun. In his early years, he was strict with himself and widely admired. He rose through the ranks to become Grand Marshal, gradually taking control of the Western Han court. After installing a child emperor, he wielded immense power. In 8 CE, Wang Mang deposed the Han emperor and proclaimed himself ruler, founding the Xin dynasty. He promptly launched sweeping reforms, later known as Wang Mang’s reforms. Though well-intentioned, they were too radical and constantly revised, severely disrupting the economy and intensifying internal and external conflicts. In the dynasty’s final years, the realm fell into chaos. Rebel forces captured Chang’an, Wang Mang was killed, and the Xin dynasty collapsed. His life remains highly controversial: he is often seen as both a usurper who toppled the Han and a reformer whose ideals failed. This book retells that period through the eyes of a transmigrator from modern times. It blends historical political intrigue, transmigration and mystery, a satisfying comeback, and a tragic epic. Drawing on historical records as its foundation, unofficial histories as its soul, and legendary tales to inspire future generations, the book offers readers a chance to learn about history and experience the power of literature.
