I Burn Tattered Sutras in the Immortal Sect

Three hundred years ago, a great fire burned half the world's scriptures. The survivors were called "Burnt Remnants." Hiding them was punishable by death, and the authorities forbade even speaking their names.

Chen Shi was the lowest-ranking book-burning laborer in an immortal sect. Born with a blank-paper body, he couldn't retain even a trace of qi, and had pretended to be mute for three years. Then, on the night of the Winter Solstice, he discovered a secret: if he recited a book's title in his mind while burning it, the wrongfully destroyed words of the scripture would fly into his body. Recognize one character, and he gained a breath of qi; recognize an entire scripture, and another book would be bound into him. While others cultivated by fighting over heavenly treasures, he cultivated by picking up scriptures that other people had burned. And so a little fire tender huddled in a snowy hollow began to recite back what had been burned three hundred years ago, one character at a time.
