The Couple's Twelve Days

A sudden car accident entwines the fates of Huang Zifu, a Hakka woman, and Li Zilin, an agricultural researcher from Beijing. He is gravely injured and hovering between life and death. To give him a chance to survive, she signs his surgery consent form as his wife, even though he is a stranger. Thus begins their unusual twelve-day “marriage.” At first, they are awkward around each other and misunderstand one another. Huang Zifu tenderly and steadfastly cares for the badly injured Li Zilin, while Li Zilin helps her out of a bind. As they support each other, they glimpse one another’s true nature, and their shared work brings their souls into harmony. Huang Zifu is well versed in the Hakka tradition of using food as medicine, while Li Zilin possesses cutting-edge agricultural technology. Despite the pain of his postoperative recovery, he is determined to help her weather natural disasters and overcome complex interpersonal struggles, covetous investors, debt, social suspicion, and family troubles. Together, they advance the construction of Hedu Village’s “Functional Vegetable Demonstration Base” and pioneer a new model of food-and-medicine agriculture. Rooted in the region’s natural resources, they devote themselves to the countryside. They develop distinctive agriculture and help villagers increase their incomes and prosper, while also carrying on the Hakka herbal traditions that are in danger of being lost and uncovering the contemporary value of traditional food and medicine culture. Their work brings real support to rural revitalization in an old revolutionary base area. They weather countless hardships along the way, with the mountains, rivers, plants, and trees as witnesses, and the passage of time as proof. Centered on their unusual twelve-day “marriage,” the novel weaves their personal fates into the grand narrative of an era. They do not lose themselves in conventional romance. Instead, amid hard work in the countryside, struggles through storm and rain, and standing by one another through adversity, two sincere hearts illuminate and fulfill each other as they fight side by side. What emerges is a moving bond between two people, clear and restrained, extraordinary and heartfelt, founded on a deep understanding between their souls.
