Bones on Paper: Unyielding Spines in the Annals of History

In the end, the body withers, and fame and achievement turn to dust. Time washes everything away, except the integrity and backbone hidden in our bones and blood. They rest deep in the pages of history, never to fade. Sima Qian wrote Records of the Grand Historian, chronicling three thousand years of human fortunes and misfortunes. He did not write of the splendor of golden ages, but of the tragic helplessness and steadfast resolve of generations past. The Yellow Emperor opened the way for Chinese civilization, was buried at Mount Qiao, and left a legacy for the ages, yet only scattered legends remain for later generations to remember him by. Xiang Yu lived fiercely and proudly, burning the Epang Palace to the ground; half his life was glory, the other half desolation. Li Guang guarded the northern frontier, serving tirelessly in more than seventy battles. Though utterly devoted, he could not escape the twists of fate and died with his grievances unresolved. Wu Zixu endured a life of hardship; his love and hatred were equally fierce, and behind his hard-won revenge lay a lifetime of sorrow and loneliness. Sima Qian suffered the ultimate humiliation and endured the world’s deepest pain, yet never gave in to despair. Taking up his brush and bamboo slips, he gathered the spirit of the Five Emperors and recorded the vicissitudes of the Qin and Han dynasties, committing to his pages the rises and falls of emperors, soldiers, commoners, and wandering heroes alike. Most people read history to study victories and defeats, the rise and fall of dynasties, and the gains and losses. But this book looks beyond history’s polished surface and sets aside worldly judgments of profit and loss. It writes only of the weight hidden in history’s depths, of the struggles and solitary courage of those who lived through troubled times, and of their unyielding backbone: though they knew a tragic end awaited, they remained true to themselves and refused to bend. A few brief strokes in the annals of history capture all the helplessness of the human world. The spirit buried beneath the passage of time is the true, imperishable lifeblood of China.
