Flames and Roses

The land lay shattered, the flames of war spreading across it. In the thirty-first year of the Republic, China was under the crushing tread of Japanese invaders. The embers of Shanghai had yet to cool, and undercurrents churned through the heart of Jiangnan. Elite Japanese special forces, intelligence agencies, and puppet-government forces joined hands, using despicable tactics such as assassination, sabotage, poison warfare, and intelligence infiltration to slaughter their compatriots and destroy the resistance. The front lines were locked in a fierce stalemate, while danger lurked at every turn behind enemy lines. With the nation in peril, this was no time for women to be treated as delicate ornaments. On the covert battlefield behind enemy lines, beyond the reach of the regular forces, a temporary all-female special operations squad quietly came into being. Its members came from different backgrounds and had very different temperaments. Some carried the burden of family vendettas, some were devoted to their country, some pressed forward to atone, and others answered the call of their faith. They cast aside their finery, took up armor and weapons, and mastered five specialties: demolition and bomb disposal, precision sniping, intelligence decryption, close-quarters combat, and disguise and infiltration. Moving between light and darkness, they ventured deep into enemy territory, unraveled the Japanese forces’ layers of schemes, and thwarted one deadly crisis after another. They were not born warriors, but they were the brave who stood firm in the darkest hour. Their flesh and blood became a shield, their iron resolve a blade. They charged into the hail of bullets and found a way through tangled plots. There was no glory in the spotlight, only steadfast devotion hidden in the smoke. No earthshaking declarations, only an unwavering determination to give not an inch.
