Iron Dawn, Great Harmony

After the Battle of Changping, Qin had crippled Zhao. In a smithy north of Handan, eight-year-old Zhao Heng remembered something else: he had lived for forty-three years, working as an engineering inspector. All his life, he had done one thing: examine a fracture and figure out why something had broken. In this life, his hands were too small to grip a sledgehammer, and he needed both hands to carry a single iron bar. He couldn't make any of the things in his head that could produce fine steel, build great ships, or cross oceans. There were no machine tools, no rubber, not even a thermometer. All he had was that one skill. So he started with an old kiln on the verge of collapse. Annealing gave iron toughness, letting a merchant's shopkeeper fail to break a plowshare even after three blows. He built a furnace with fired bricks, persuading a stubborn master craftsman to pick up the rammer he hadn't touched in years. The craftsmen's register gained a new entry: “knows how to anneal.” It bought him time, but also pushed him into greater danger. The government demanded iron taxes. The merchant clans wanted profit. The artisans had no papers to free them from their status. And on the old silk cloth an elderly foundry master had given him was written the name of a place beyond a ridge to the west. There, stone could be ground into powder and tasted faintly sweet. Sweet stone made hard iron. He knew Qin would ultimately triumph. He also knew the road it would take: burn books, build walls, and force the people into labor service. Before the war machine could roll over the land, he would seize the realm and forge a different kind of unification: standardize measurements, connect the roads, provide famine relief, make medicine accessible, and stop people from being handed over to the government. Anyone traveling from one state to another would no longer be treated as an enemy. A world united across a thousand miles begins with a plowshare that cannot be broken.
