Black Soil, Blazing Banners

From January 1932 to February 1934, the bitter winter of the Lesser Khingan Mountains blanketed the black soil of Northeast China. As the land was thrown into turmoil, the puppet Manchukuo forces steadily infiltrated remote mountain villages. Tian Shanhu, a young leader driven by patriotic fervor and exceptional ingenuity, rallied farmers and hunters to form an anti-Japanese force later known by locals as the “Black Clothes Squad,” raising the banner of resistance high. There were no seasoned veterans, no miracles from heaven. Still in the flower of his youth, he felt his way forward through confusion and danger, relying on sound judgment and strategy to evade enemy encirclements. The story’s central leader is only twenty-six, nothing like the seasoned, steady middle-aged commanders people might imagine. He is an ordinary young man in a time of chaos who carves out a path of resistance among the mountains and rivers through thought, courage, and tenacity. This novel vividly recreates the arduous struggle of the early mountain resistance forces, recording the passion and resolve of young people on the black soil. Grounded in authentic history of the War of Resistance Against Japan, this novel recreates the lives of ordinary people in rural Northeast China during the early years of Manchukuo. It focuses on the opening phase of the fourteen-year war, following one young man’s desperate struggle to protect his homeland with his very life. History is a mirror. The past is never far behind, and the future is sure to be bright.
