I Work as a Doctor in the Movies

Shen Che is an intern doctor. His skills are mediocre, and he lacks confidence. If the head nurse isn't watching him, he doesn't even dare take someone's blood pressure. Fang Yu, another trainee in his cohort, takes his medical records from him while holding a milk tea. "How many patients have you managed on your own? Listen to me." That night, while on duty, a patient with a fever of 39.1°C was brought to Bed Five. Just as Shen Che was about to speak, a line of text appeared before his eyes: [Scenario loaded: Influenza.] [Mission: Survive and save three people.] [Tip: You are infected. Temperature: 39.2°C.] When he opened his eyes again, he was lying on a camp bed, a blood-streaked glob of phlegm in his palm. The corridor was full of people lying on the floor, and the loudspeaker was announcing, "More than three hundred people are waiting at the fever clinic." There was no tutorial, no starter pack. He missed twice while trying to give himself an injection, then leaned against the headboard and counted his heartbeats. This time, no one was coming to save him. Ten days later, back in the real world, two bruised spots had appeared on the back of his hand. He pressed his stethoscope to a patient and pinpointed the crackles in the lung within three seconds. The pulse oximeter read 88. Director Zhou was silent for two seconds, then changed the prescription from ibuprofen to hospitalization and supplemental oxygen. Fang Yu stood nearby with his milk tea, pen hovering over his little notebook, but didn't write a thing. He learned medicine with his life on the line in one virus movie after another, then returned to reality and pulled people back from death's door, one patient at a time. He wasn't a genius. He paid for it with his life.
