The Seventh Knock

Shen Du, a thirty-one-year-old architectural acoustics consultant, was rational and composed, making his living with data and instruments. He never believed in ghosts, only frequencies, waveforms, and physical phenomena that could be repeatedly verified. That is, until an unsigned commission led him back to the Xingmang Theater, an old playhouse that had been closed for nineteen years and was about to be demolished. Twenty years earlier, when he was eleven, his older sister Shen Yao had mysteriously disappeared while watching a puppet show at this theater. There were no witnesses and no trace of her, and the case remained unsolved to this day. The note with the commission contained only one sentence: “Xingmang Theater, second box on the left on the third floor. Abnormal frequency detected. Payment: the answer you want to know.” Shen Du entered the theater with his professional equipment, intending only to carry out a routine acoustics inspection. But he soon discovered echoes that should not exist there. Some sounds did not come from the present; they were echoes left behind and replayed again and again, as if the building itself had “remembered” them. Among those echoes, he heard words his sister had spoken twenty years ago. In a crack in the wall, he found the ticket stub from the day she disappeared. Behind the wall of the third-floor box, he discovered a sealed room with completely abnormal acoustic properties, as well as a life-sized puppet dressed in the same kind of dress as his sister. And every time he deciphered another layer of the sound code, a door that had never existed before appeared somewhere in the theater. A mysterious voice claiming to be “the seventh audience member” came from the other side of a wall, telling him a chilling truth: His sister had never disappeared. She had been “recorded” into the theater.
