Days on Shangchuan Island

Waves from the South China Sea lap against the shores of Shangchuan Island. All thirty short stories draw on the everyday lives of the soldiers stationed there: the cuckoo's call on their first day on the island, moonlight at the signal station, the kitchen squad's cooking fires, and casual chats beneath the old banyan tree. There are no hollow tales of heroism, only the sweat, the salt of the sea, and the bonds between comrades, laid bare on the page just as they are in the years spent guarding the island.
