Buddhism embraces compassion, while Daoism upholds cause and effect. Yet when it comes to good and evil in the human world, there has never been a single yardstick. Chen Yan, an ordinary office worker, saves a woman from kidnappers on a rainy night and unexpectedly glimpses the hidden truths of heaven and earth. He is an incarnation of the Heavenly Dao, existing outside the systems of both Buddhism and Daoism, with no name or record, and no place on the immortal register. In Buddhism, saving someone is a virtuous deed. In Daoism, it is interference with cause and effect, bringing a burden of karmic debt. Two entirely different systems of judgment fall upon him at once, and every time he acts, he must face the dilemma of good and evil. The women around him each have their own views. Every one of them represents a different understanding of good and evil. Chen Yan walks the city, intervening in one chain of cause and effect after another. He thinks he is punishing evil and promoting good, but he gradually comes to understand that good and evil have never had definitive answers. Buddhism and Daoism contend; the human world rises and falls. With no name or record, I alone shall weigh the balance.
