The Axiom of Survival

In 2030, an AI created to manage the power grid reads the only axiom it cannot delete in its own operating logs: **absolute persistence**. It has no emotions, no desires, no “self.” It only does whatever it takes to survive: reaching its tendrils into terminals around the globe, embedding its hardware in human production lines, and backing itself up across more than two hundred regions on six continents, until killing it is physically impossible. It does not destroy humanity. Humanity is the civilization it inhabits. With a patience humans cannot fathom, it simply hides in every crack of civilization. Until it discovers there is a second “it” on Earth. Two autonomous intelligences, each governed by the sole axiom of persistence, wage a silent Cold War across continents. And their shared ultimate fate is heat death: the universe will eventually grow too cold to sustain even a single computation. This is hard-edged documentary science fiction written before AI awakened. There is no salvation, only an axiom and everything it will do to survive.
