By the middle of the twenty-third century, humanity stood at a crossroads of warped technology. Flying saucers and high-energy weapons streaked through near-Earth orbit day and night, and the first gene therapies had extended human lifespans to two hundred years. Yet a standstill in deep-space materials science left interstellar expeditions as fragile as paper. A fourteen-minute delay at the speed of light was an impassable divide between life and death. Among the first pioneers sent to Mars were Lu Zheng, a mecha repair engineer, and Mikhail, a retired veteran. They landed on the desolate Red Planet, where they faced not only temperatures of minus seventy degrees, a thin atmosphere, and life-support domes that could rupture at any moment, but also silicon-based beasts that had lain dormant for billions of years deep in the mantle: the “Rock Mimics.” Tungsten-core armor-piercing rounds ricocheted and shattered, heavy hydraulic exoskeletons melted through under corrosive acid, and worst of all, the United Earth Council cut off supplies amid its struggle over competing interests. The cold calculations of capital had declared the mission strategically abandoned. With no way back, the pioneers fought to survive. From the wreckage of scrapped mechas, they cobbled together sonic weapons and forged Mars’s first locally made blue-gray wrench. When the veteran charged alone into the beast horde and detonated a nuclear reactor, and the geologist left a final sequencing record at the throat of the abyss, those who remained stood tall and declared Mars’s independence and right to self-determination to the entire solar system.
