Hauntings in the Old City: Rule 47 of the Demolition Zone

Surveyor Lin Qiao takes on the job of measuring eight apartment blocks in Liuxiang, west of the city. The old buildings are about to be demolished, but the rules carved into the stairwell walls are ones no one is willing to explain: Don't look back after the stairwell light goes out. Don't open the north window on rainy days. Don't look in a mirror at midnight. Don't lend fire in the dead of night. This building has no basement. The longtime residents keep their mouths shut. Only Chen Guifang says that these eight blocks are the eight gates sealing the city underground, that the forty-six explicit rules are keys to the gates, and that the forty-seventh is no key at all. It is the gate itself, and Lin Qiao has already seen it. The second block vanishes overnight, replaced by a pristine empty lot, as though it had never existed. Lin Qiao becomes Liuxiang's new gatekeeper: with every building scheduled for demolition, he must guard one of the gates before the bulldozers arrive. As the buildings come down one by one, objects left behind when the city was sealed in 1963 keep seeping through cracks in the walls: enamel bowls stamped with the year, boundary markers with backward inscriptions. The city underground draws closer, its breathing stirring it awake inch by inch. Under the moonlight, the eight blocks form the Chinese character for “city” written upside down. At last, Lin Qiao understands: the city is not underground. It is in people's hearts. Volume One ends at the last building without a key: after the seventh block falls, only a single door remains. This is not a ghost-hunting horror novel, but an urban fable about forgetting and memory: what falls away is never just bricks and tiles, but the door in people's hearts that keeps the past locked away. The restrained, cool-white prose stays close to the coal stoves and clotheslines of the apartment blocks. The rules are stated, never explained, and the horror lies within the quietest routines. The answer points to the eighth block: “seven keys and one door.” And one of the keys is still out on loan.
