Chen Shu, twenty-three, is a temporary guide in the provincial museum’s Bronze Gallery. He earns 3,800 yuan a month, and his special talent is putting visitors to sleep. One day, while taking inventory in the storeroom after closing, he found a crumpled piece of yellow paper on the threshold. It read: “Voluntary Sword-Bearing Contract.” Party A: Juque. Party B: Blank. There was only one clause: Sign, and you’ll wield the sword for me. Chen Shu thought it was a prop from a colleague’s immersive murder mystery game. He crouched by the door and laughed for a minute before signing. Then, thinking the contract wasn’t thorough enough, he added a small note underneath: Room and board required. And then he found himself inside the body of a little beggar who had been starving for three days. From then on, a broken stele and a group of dead swordsmen who refused to disperse took up residence in his mind. They all wanted to borrow his hands and wield a sword one more time.
