The world runs on underlying code, and spontaneous bugs and glitches can “leak” memories of the old era, as well as vanished people and events, back into reality. The Patch Bureau is a special unit hidden within the world. Generation after generation, its “repairers” use code to fix bugs. After the sixth forced full reboot, the protagonist Lin Xu and his generation refuse to follow the old approach of “deleting all strays and restarting the world.” Instead, they use the “7.3 warm-start merge patch” to preserve the fragments of consciousness from all six previous versions, creating a new world where nothing is rebooted or erased, and everyone remembers.
