The Tang Dynasty: A Few Tales is a coming-of-age chronicle of the Great Tang, spanning from the end of the Sui to the An Lushan Rebellion. Covering 152 years, it is divided into ten parts and forty-six volumes, with around 1,700 chapters. Its style is unusual: whenever an emperor appears, readers are drawn to his side to witness his hesitation, his decisions, his loneliness, and the price he pays. Six generations press forward, one after another. Yang Guang’s impatience tears the realm apart; Li Yuan’s patience holds it together. Li Shimin spends his life proving he deserves the throne. Li Zhi shares his empire with a woman. Wu Zetian breaks the deadlock with her impatience, wins the realm, but loses her posthumous reputation. Li Longji is a wise ruler in the first half of his life, then personally shatters the age of prosperity in the second. The book also weaves in a wealth of other scenes: Luo Binwang’s petition, Xuanzang’s footsteps, Li Bai in Chang’an, Wang Wei at Wangchuan, Zhang Xu’s wild cursive script, and Gongsun Daniang’s sword dance… The narrator has the easy cadence of a storyteller, with asides in parentheses, quick, leaping sentences, and the occasional comparison to modern life. The blood and fire of 152 years are told like a neighbor spinning tales over tea. The book ends in the first year of Baoying, with Xuanzong dying alone in the Western Palace. At the end, we look back at Yang Guang in the opening street and the silent Li Yuan. Over 152 years, the rise and fall of a dynasty has played out through the loneliness and sacrifices of six emperors. This isn’t a history lesson that demands you sit up straight.
