My Inn Connects to the History of Science, and Newton Checks In from the Start

Chen Yu, a physics PhD, dropped out halfway through his studies and returned to a small riverside town. For eight years, he tended the stargazing inn his grandfather had left him. Life was uneventful, the inn turned a profit each year, and there was a telescope on the roof. It wasn’t great, but it wasn’t bad, either. Then, on a rainy night, a long-haired man carrying a quill walked out of storage room 304, which had been locked for three years. He introduced himself as Isaac Newton. He said he had been working on some calculations in his room, and when he opened the door to fetch water, he found himself in the inn’s hallway in 2026. He couldn’t go back. He even catalogued his own tongue as an experimental subject. He repaired the old pocket watch on the wall and discovered that the sun was keeping inaccurate time. He asked, “Whose clock controls all the clocks in the world?” Then he fell silent for a long time. More guests would come in the future: Darwin, Mendeleev, Marie Curie, Maxwell, Turing, Einstein. Each had reached a tipping point in their own era, dreamed of a door, and found themselves at the inn as soon as they stepped through it. They stayed for weeks or months, then checked out and returned to the moment they had opened the door. Chen Yu was both the keeper of the door and their translator. He couldn’t tell the guests the years they would die, reveal how later generations would judge them, or cross certain red lines. But he could pour them a glass of warm water and say, “You’re headed in the right direction. The problem is the ruler you’re using to measure the Earth. You’ll have to go back and figure out for yourself which ruler is wrong.” This is a novel about the history of science, and also a novel about an inn. The stars are still the same stars.
