Beyond the Mountains

When we were young, trapped deep in the mountains, she and I were the only light in each other's darkest nights. We fell in love beneath the setting sun in the valley and in the evening breeze along the fields, and promised each other forever. But deep down, we were walking two different paths. I gradually came to understand that the best place to settle in this world is in the present: to cherish the simple comforts of daily life and find contentment in staying together. Her gaze always reached beyond the mountains, fixed on what lay on the other side. She refused to be confined to one small corner, determined to pursue a higher, farther world. Our young love ran deep, but it could not overcome the ambitions each of us carried in our hearts. There were no fights, no betrayals. We simply headed in different directions. Later, I stopped, put down roots in my hometown, married, and raised a family. My days were filled with the steady comforts of ordinary life. Yet sometimes, sitting alone late at night, I would think of the person who once stood beside me on that mountain slope to watch the sunset. That place in my heart would always be empty. She gave everything she had to cross the mountains and seas, studying, traveling, and climbing higher with every step. At last, she gained everything she had longed for as a girl: knowledge, prospects, respectability, and a life that seemed dazzling to everyone else. Yet on countless nights when she worked until the early hours, she would stand before the floor-to-ceiling windows, gazing down at the lights in countless homes, and suddenly find herself lost in thought. The city blazed with light, but not one lamp was lit for her. She had everything, yet she would never again find a love as honest and fervent as the one we shared back then. I found contentment in an ordinary life, yet I could never again offer that fierce, heart-stirring love of youth. The cruelest regret is not being forced apart despite loving each other. It is when two people truly love each other, but one chooses the comforts of home while the other pursues distant horizons. Beyond the mountains lies a world of countless splendors, but we will never again be the two who watched the sunset together on that mountainside.
