In April 2024, Shanghai hung over the city like a gigantic sponge soaked through with water, heavy and oppressive. Relentless plum rains drenched the entire steel-and-concrete forest in a sticky gray gloom. Moisture from the Huangpu River seeped through the half-open window, carrying the inescapable musty smell peculiar to the south.
