He could have escaped unharmed...

He could have pledged allegiance to the new dynasty...

But he had to save them.

What does it mean to "knowingly save"?

Ming was their three brothers' surname, and the name of a dynasty on the brink of collapse.

Save was what they set out to do, choosing to act even when they knew it was impossible.

To knowingly save was to know it was impossible, yet insist on doing it.

Thus, they called it Ming Ming Saves.

The story begins with three wanted criminals.
