What should ordinary people do if what comes up from the ground is not water, but man-eating rats, a monster that can imitate your words, and something darker than night? There is no system, no superpowers, no savior from heaven. You are just a lamplighter, vegetable seller, shoe repairer, and accountant. All you have in your hand is a kerosene lamp, half a barrel of oil, and a stick. Do you keep it or not? I wrote about a group of these people. They are neither great nor brave. They quarrel, are selfish, and fight over half a barrel of oil. But when the red night comes, they will stand at the street corner with lights. When one lamp goes out, another one is replenished. If there is one person missing, one person will take over.
