Silent Evidence

Behind the ear of a dead internet celebrity, there is a perfectly formed medical mark. Shen Yan, a profiler with the City Public Security Bureau, recognizes it as the trace that was buried in her mother's missing-person case file twelve years ago. From then on, every case she takes involving a female victim has a different victim and a different cause of death, but the same private seal behind the ear. Following this signature, she investigates a fall from a building, a medical murder, and domestic abuse disguised as suicide. At last, she sees the person in a white coat on the other side of the mirror. The unfinished half-sentence her mother left behind, the name torn from an old file, and the marks nobody ever thought to examine all point to the same person. Shen Yan will use her profiler's pen to untangle, one strand at a time, the web signed by the people who silenced these victims. She will make her way through case files, hospitals, and the doors blocked by "custom," turning every mark behind an ear into evidence for the court, until the name the killer branded on their skin becomes testimony that sends him to prison.
