I am He You. I am writing a novel for the first time, about the Hexi Corridor and the land at the foot of the Qilian Mountains that has been nourished by snow and water for thousands of years. It tells about a young man named He Changbin who started playing music in a winery and then sold potatoes, built a cold storage, opened a gravel pit, and engaged in real estate. It sounds like an entrepreneurial story, but in fact I write about how water flows, how people live, and how the land is hollowed out and then filled back up. There is an old main canal in the book that has been without water for ten years. He Changbin steps on it every step of the way, thinking that he is running forward, but in fact he has been claiming a river that has been cut off and cannot go back. And Mu Ning, who spent more than ten years squatting in front of the sorting table turning potatoes one by one, never saying much, but every time she looked back, she was there. I wrote very slowly, so slowly that every character's silence had weight. Mark the footprints of those squatting by the main canal waiting for water to come. If one day you open it and hear the sound of water at the bottom of the ditch - that's enough.
