The world is, on the surface, a tribute to steel and brass: huge steam engines roar to push gears, pneumatic pipes shuttle between masonry buildings, and oil lamps and neon lights create ambiguous light in the mist. But what goes deep into the bones is another layer of truth. Gods do exist, but they are not good beings. They sleep in the deep sea, inhabit the starry sky, or parasitize in the roar of every steam pipe. Ordinary people can only glimpse the afterimages cast by the gods through "magic steam", a mist extracted from the cracks in the earth's veins that can temporarily distort reality.
