Borrowing a Lamp

In 1583, a foreign monk named Matteo Ricci set foot on Chinese soil wearing Confucian robes. He brought with him a chiming clock, a map of the world, and Euclidean geometry. The scholar-bureaucrats of the Ming Empire were shocked: these foreigners were knowledgeable. So the imperial court opened its doors and invited them to revise calendars, build cannons, and translate scientific classics. Xu Guangqi, the most knowledgeable man in the Ming Dynasty, became their strongest ally. But no one noticed—the missionaries weren't just "giving away" stuff. They are "taking". Agricultural books, medical books, star maps, gunpowder formulas, sericulture techniques... Thousands of years of knowledge were confiscated box by box and shipped to Europe. Xu Guangqi and others thought they were "learning from foreigners to learn skills", but what they didn't know was that the door they opened with their own hands never closed again. Four people, four generations, one hundred and forty years. The junior officials of Qintian Prison saw the stars disappear. The book boy saw the transfer of knowledge. The friar saw himself. The maid saw the truth. None of them are bad people. But good people doing what they think is right can sometimes be more deadly than bad people doing.
