Sun Yan simply takes off the golden headband, puts it on Tang Monk, and chants the spell in reverse. When Tang Monk tries to pull rank as his master, Sun Yan flicks him on the forehead. “I respect you, so you’re my master. If I don’t, you’re nobody!” Strangely, though, the timid Tang Monk gradually sees through the hypocrisy of the gods and Buddhas under Sun Yan’s reverse instruction, and comes to understand the true Mahayana teachings. “Spending a lifetime saving the world and spending a lifetime saving one person are both great acts of kindness!” When they reach Mount Ling, Tang Monk points at the Buddha and shouts: “Wukong! Bajie! Let’s take him together! Take his damn throne!”
