"Bamboo Forest" is based on the characters and general trends of the times in the late Han, Cao, Wei, and Jin Dynasties, but it is not a strict chronology. The book makes a legendary reconstruction of the characters' ages, friendships, sequence of events and some institutional details, allowing historical figures from different eras to meet in the same spiritual context. The handed down poems, main characters and historical destiny of real people should be based as much as possible; Jianghu sects, weapons records, Qingzhuhui, Wumiansi and a large number of character experiences are fictional in the novel. Readers can regard this book as a martial arts legend with the spirit of the Wei and Jin Dynasties as its soul and historical figures as its shadow. Historical facts are bones, legends are shapes. What the book seeks is not to restore the chronology of each day, but to ask: How can a person preserve his choices and names when dynasties change, friends die, and authenticity is difficult to distinguish.
