The Legacy of the Heroic Way

The story begins in 1111. The civil official Huang Shang is ordered to compile books, and through the Daoist classics, he grasps peerless inner power without a teacher. This draws him into the struggle between the Ming Cult and the imperial court, where he meets the Sword Demon Dugu Qiubai and the Ming Cult's Holy Maiden, Fang Baihua. As Fang La's rebellion sets Jiangnan ablaze, Huang Shang's entire family is massacred amid political intrigue and martial-world vendettas. His unbearable grief turns a mild-mannered scholar into a vengeful demon. He retreats to the mountains for fifteen years, recording his insights into the secrets of martial arts in the Nine Yin Manual, a legendary martial arts classic that serves as the story's “MacGuffin.”

When Huang Shang emerges to seek revenge, he discovers that all his enemies have already died amid the upheavals of the age. Adrift in a profound sense of emptiness, he embarks on a journey across the land, gradually finding peace. Meanwhile, the martial world has quietly passed into new hands: Hong Qigong, who witnessed the Jingkang Calamity, takes up the banner of the Beggars' Guild; Yue Fei leaves behind an eternal lament at the Wind-Wave Pavilion; and a new generation of great masters, including Wang Chongyang, Huang Yaoshi, Duan Zhixing, and Ouyang Feng, begins to emerge.

Told through multiple POVs and structured as a chronicle, this work uses Huang Shang's personal tragedy as its hidden thread, weaving together decades of change in the martial world from the end of the Northern Song to the start of the Southern Song. It seamlessly fuses historical events with martial-arts fantasy, including the Jingkang Incident, Yue Fei's northern campaigns, and the origins of the Mount Hua Sword Debate, while exploring three central themes: “power and revenge,” “chivalry and country,” and “legacy and fate.” It fills in the scattered hints about the martial world’s past in The Legend of the Condor Heroes, transforming them into a sweeping, self-contained epic of the era before the Five Greats, and giving every martial arts manual and legendary figure a tragic yet fitting origin.
