Cicadas Fall Silent at Summer's End

In 2001, in a small northern town, plane-tree leaves carpeted the long streets, the speakers in the music shop played “Summer Fruit” on repeat, and the chalk dust in a high school classroom held the most burning, awkward secrets of youth.

From their clumsy first meeting, when one of them bumped into a doorframe, to the words “Green reeds, lush and green” written on a pebble; from a ten-year promise sealed with hooked little fingers in the evening breeze on the square, to the tenderness and joy hidden in a bowl of hot rice noodles. Liu Xuan, a stubborn boy who had come down from the mountains, met Shi Jing, a gentle girl raised in the city. The flutter in their seventeen-year-old hearts was like the afternoon sun in autumn: clean and bright, reckless enough not to worry about what lay ahead.

They thought that endless notes passed in class, half-shares of meat, and a promise to “get into college in Beijing together” could overcome the long years ahead.

But young love can never escape the constant tug-of-war between pride and insecurity. Suspicion, cold shoulders, broken promises, and misunderstandings finally erupted on a street corner during the May Day holiday. A quiet “Let's break up,” light as the wind, turned all their sweetness into shards of glass embedded in their hearts.

Years later, old friends reunite. The mountain breeze is as warm as it was back then, and the ginkgo leaves still have the same shape. But the people standing beneath the tree have long since learned how to love, how to let go, and how to make peace with the awkward, sincere selves they once were.

The greatest regret was never that they drifted apart. It's that back then, they both loved the people they most wanted to cherish in the most hurtful ways possible.
