In July of the fourth year of Taiping and Xingguo's reign, Song Taizong Zhao Guangyi took advantage of the remaining power of the Northern Han Dynasty and personally led an army of 100,000 to besiege Youzhou, hoping to regain the sixteen states of Yanyun in one fell swoop. After months of fierce fighting, the Song military divisions were exhausted, and the Liao general Yelu Xiuge led his elite cavalry to attack hundreds of miles and launched a night attack on the banks of the Gaoliang River. The Song army was defeated, and Zhao Guangyi was hit by two arrows. He grabbed a donkey cart from the rebellious army and fled southward in a hurry, running for 200 miles in one night. From then on, he was nicknamed the "Sorghum River Cart God" by later generations. This defeat did not kill him, but like an arrow that could never be pulled out, it pierced into the next eighteen years of his imperial career.
