Breaking Through the Mid-Career Wall: Playing by the Rules

1. Main Character

Lin Chen, 32, is in charge of procurement and operations at a small or midsize company. Married with two children and saddled with a mortgage and car loan, he is seen by everyone as an “honest wage slave, a controllable tool.”

At his core, he is patient and clear-eyed, meticulous, extremely rational, and deeply empathetic. He never goes looking for trouble, but refuses to let anyone walk all over him. He excels at spotting weaknesses in people, seeing through unspoken workplace rules, and dismantling traps set for personal gain.

2. His Exclusive Golden Finger

[Workplace Rules Insight System]

It does not grant combat power or hand him money directly. Instead, it unlocks the hidden rules of companies, workplaces, and interpersonal relationships:

1. Automatically identifies unreasonable company policies, managers’ manipulative tactics, coworkers’ traps, and workplace backstabbing schemes.

2. Predicts the consequences of every choice, helping him avoid dead ends such as layoffs, scapegoating, pay cuts, and disputes.

3. Unlocks the best ways to fight back within the rules, protect his interests, and gain an advantage at work, allowing him to challenge injustice legally and compliantly.

3. Setting and Central Conflict

The story focuses on the realities of small and midsize businesses: managers making empty promises and using psychological manipulation, poaching key employees, coworkers banding together to shift blame, bosses discarding workers once they are no longer useful, wage exploitation, unfair divisions of responsibility and authority, and workplace backstabbing and infighting.

Main storyline: A burdened middle-aged man from the bottom of society goes from enduring everything just to survive to seeing through every workplace rule. He breaks through one impasse after another and strikes back with precision, protecting his family’s livelihood and exposing workplace abuses. In the end, he rises from a mere tool at work to an industry dark horse who controls the rules and commands valuable resources.
