Gouwazi and the Widow Village

At the end of the Ming Dynasty and the beginning of the Qing Dynasty, Sichuan was littered with corpses. A farmer who cut off his fingers to avoid military service wandered to a widow's village in the mountains. Thirteen widows, one "waste", stick together to survive in the cracks of tigers, defeated soldiers, plague, and famine. Thirty-three years later, Liugou's population grew from a dozen to eighty-seven, and the ancestral hall was filled with names. This is not a heroic epic, but a story of the humblest man, in the most desperate era, using his hardest life to lay down the deepest roots.
